Oil and GasThis sector comprises those engaged in the conventional oil and gas resource industry, as well as those in the oil sands resources. ForestryThis sector has a 40+ year history and a strong future in the region. With both deciduous and coniferous forest products, pulp and lumber industries continue to play a key role in the region’s economic profile. AgricultureMore than half of the farm operations in the area are cattle, followed by a variety of field crops, grains and oilseed production. Agro forestry is emerging as viable, particularly on marginal crop land. TourismRegional leisure tourism is an important sector. Located just three hours from Greater Edmonton’s population of one million, the region is home to spectacular natural features including lakes, rivers, unique boreal areas and bird habitats, as well as wild land parks. Commercial FishingCommercial fishing is a $5 million per year industry in the area. Two of the region’s lakes – Lesser Slave Lake and Utikuma Lake – supply more than half of the province’s core whitefish catch.
